Windows 10. I installed a PCI-E USB 3.0 card. I have numerous USB devices. Would I be better off with an external USB hub? There are five ports on this card, and requires power from a SATA power cable.

Get a Mac?

You mean it requires power from a power supply plug? SATA cables don’t supply power AFAIK?

2nded!
(as someone who uses a lot of both, I am, unashamedly a Mac fanboy)

How much other PCIE stuff is in this computer? You usually can’t just fill up all the slots; there’s a certain amount of capacity to be had

Yes. But this issue seems to have resolved itself with a reboot.

The issue has resolved itself. I paid a guy $100 to reboot my machine.

Check that the card supports PCIE gen 2 motherboards as that’s what yours is.
I will also say I’ve had issues with some of the cheaper USB3 cards being finicky. A USB Hub definitely would work, but wouldn’t get you any speed benefits .

A reboot seems to have done the trick here.

We had this occur on PCs used to test equipment. Douglas, our s/w guy came up with this. In a DOS window opene
d as admin
C:> set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
C:> start devmgmt.msc
will open Device Manager. Click “View” and select “Show Hidden Devices”. Now you can delete all the ghosted devices under USB, COM , etc. We would do a reboot but that may not be necessary. Hope this helps.

I’m getting a new 27 " iMac here shortly. I wanted the one with the 1TB fusion drive, but they dropped that model the day after I placed my order. Rotten timing on my part. I’m running an 11 year old iMac now that RustyVandura installed an SSD in a couple of years ago. My boys are all using Windows boxes for games, and I don’t like trying to maintain them. Not dissing Windows, I just don’t know the system, and W10 made things even less Mac-like.

Thank you. What’s the story on the cable cross section in your user profile image?

100 to reboot? Hope that was a joke.

For a house call? $100 is cheap. But yes, it was a joke.

Neither my avatar nor name are reflective of who I am. I came here as a lurker and was trying to hide but you folks are too interesting for that .
The cable is a cross section of the undersea cable laid along the Pacific from central CA to Hawaii in the mid-90s , I think. Capable of ~400 mps traffic but has 3 early long shot optical fibers in it. The 3 big wires are for stress and the outside couple layers is armor . The data cable and fiber are the little stuff embedded in the black. Just a random interesting pic I found long ago and researched a little.

There are people I consider to be great friends on this space. People just want to be mensches here, and those who do not just seem to have gravitated away.
Speaking of cables, here is one of my favorite videos on the entire internet. I can’t say why I find it so compelling, but I do:
And on the subject of the internet’s most interesting videos to Rusty Vandura, this is also at the top of the Very Short List. I’ve watched it a dozen times if I’ve watched it once:

Yes, I have both bookmarked. Incredible skill expressed; real professionals . Th ese guys have done this often. Now, think of splicing that cable in 5000' of water on a rolling deck! I haven’t looked for a video of it though.
